How to choose the best spot to anchor

We’re back on our own and this time we’re looking for a new anchorage. But how do we choose a good spot, what do we need to take into consideration when selecting a good place and what sources of information do we use?

We look in detail at the many useful ways of finding an anchorage which will do the job:

  • Published data
  • Peer to peer
  • Other yachties
  • Local knowledge
  • Downloads
  • Charts
  • Weather

Satellite imagery plays a big part in our selection and navigation when it comes to the more tricky places. “How to navigate through reefs – best apps to use” is a useful starting place.

Before you turn up you need to make sure there are no restrictions, and once you arrive you must scope it out. Once the anchor is down have some contingencies already worked out in case of an emergency.
