Anchoring with the charts, depth and weather against you

The last time Jamie was in the UK was at the end of 2018, for Liz it was January 2019. So the past six weeks playing catch-up with friends and family there (and Spain, where Liz’s brother lives) has been a joy. For all of us, trying to distill three years of experiences into one or two conversations was a challenge.

But now that we’re back in beautiful Indonesia, normal service is resumed and we’re ready to rock.

First of all, we’re going to catch up on exactly where we were before we put Esper on the hard and flew out.

Now, where were we…

Anchoring with the charts, depth and weather against you

We love Sulawesi, but it’s not easy finding somewhere safe to anchor when the water depth rises from 1.5km to 7m in seconds.

Video highlights:

  • Starting the day with some motor-sailing in northern Sulawesi
  • Navionics charts are still out, so relying on satellite
  • Avoiding local fishing boats
  • Sea state and weather concerns
  • Dropping the hook at Sauk, Northern Sulawesi region
  • Grey day with terns
  • Sailing archipelagic waters with 1500m water beneath us
  • Scoping a thousand-metre bay to anchor

More all about wild anchoring in the video…
