Less than three weeks prior to our departure there was an attack with weapons on a commercial vessel slap bang in the middle of our route. If you knew there had been a recent piracy attack where you were heading, would you keep your intended course and still set your sailboat towards that destination? How would you react?

Lots of chatter about the incident in sailing forums and newspapers combined to make us nervous. We read it all… and between the lines. Experience told us that it was an unusual occurrence in an area generally regarded as safe.
What would you do? We talk about piracy in the cruising community in an earlier video, “Pirates, piracy, weapons and guns!” Click here or on the image below to watch…
The attack was on a commercial vessel and the crew had been robbed at gunpoint, losing personal possessions as well as their shoes. Was it just chancers? Was it motivated by poverty, greed? Taking the crew’s shoes was unusual. There didn’t seem to be any kind of political or extreme religious motive.
It was odd.
