One of our favourite places in Thorne is the Community Wood situated right across from us in the marina. We began to get to know its paths back in February, but now Marley is living with us, we walk there several times a day.
With the internationally renowned Humberhead Peatlands on our doorstep, including Thorne, Goole and Crowle Moors, the spill-over of wildlife and plant life is phenomenal.

The area is around 79 acres, and apart from lively woodland, contains streams, ponds, marshland, and meadows. We have seen rabbits, squirrels, foxes and deer. There are great crested newts here, but they haven’t crossed our path yet. An array of birds sing hello every time we venture out, from blackcaps, gold crests, finches, and song thrushes to wrens, warblers, and more. We recorded a tawny owl at night back in February, but still haven’t managed to spot it.

Winter has turned into spring and now summer is on its way. So, for us, coming from 15 years in the tropics, to be in a country with seasons is still a novelty.
