Sudan is the gem of Africa. From the coast it is not only unspoiled but utterly stunning too. Then one sets foot on land and meets the people: they’re as beautiful as the land they inhabit.

Sudan is one of those countries I really wish I’d spent more time in and it is my wish to return one day. In the meantime I have this set of images to remind me just how poor the people are, yet completely humble and happy. At least in front of the camera.

There’s a funny story attached to the above photo. At the time, I was still nervous about getting my camera out in public, so I quickly snapped this before hiding my gear. The woman in red saw me, smiled, and then shouted something to everyone around her. Each person in this photo then turned round, looked at me, and laughed. I’ve no idea what she said, but that incident certainly loosened me up a bit!


We didn’t spend long in Port Sudan. I mean, literally a couple of hours, but it was a nice little taster of the area.
