If you watched my presentation to the Royal Photographic Society a few months ago, you’ll know that I’ve been working on a few travel photography projects. While I am back in the UK, I am putting aside some time to work on my latest project, my submission for my ARPS distinction.
What is ARPS?
The RPS has three distinctions: the LRPS, the ARPS and the FRPS. They are ‘examinations’ in which members submit a set of images, based upon a theme, to be examined by some of the best photographers in the UK. I already have my LRPS and should have achieved my ARPS years ago, so now is the time to pull my socks up and submit some work. While the LRPS distinction is a more general accreditation, the ARPS falls into distinct categories, including travel and documentary.
Indonesians at Home?
Putting together a set of fifteen images is no small undertaking, not least because I have so many photographs to choose from. It’s more than throwing together fifteen great images though. They must work as a cohesive set and all be technically ‘perfect’.
The process of putting these together takes hours, days even. Right now I am at the ‘second stage’ of selecting my photos where I think I have worked out the theme: Indonesians At Home. This is a theme that could be explored further for the sake of the ARPS, like examining the social dynamics of Indonesians in their street, for example. Another theme I am considering is Indonesians At Work.

If you are interested in photography or want to learn how to put a set of photographs together, then sign up for my updates on my photography website. At each stage of the process, I’ll be posting up a blog on my approach. If I have time, I might even post up a video on my photography youtube channel. The sign-up form is here.
If you like our content and would like to support us, we will give you ad-free access to our videos before they go live to the public, discounts in our shop, access to Jamie’s iconic full-res photographs, and supporter-only blog posts. Click our ugly mugs for more info!
I wasn’t aware Jamie had a photography-specific Youtube channel. Thanks for the link!
Hey David, don’t expect a video a week like the FTB channel! However, I may post video versions of my ARPS articles, which will allow me scope to add more images than the blog post.
