When you’ve been living on a boat for 13 years, you build up a vast amount of tools. In the first of our real-time sailing updates from lockdown in Borneo, YouTube viewer Travis Collier asks, “would you please do an episode on essential tools and gear”.
Great idea and it’s a question we’re often asked. As you’ll discover, it wasn’t that easy to answer because Jamie had trouble trying to restrict the list to 10. By the way, we’re just talking basic toolbox here, not all the specialised equipment needed to repair and maintain the sails, rigging, deck, hull etc.
If you have a question you’d like us to discuss on camera, put it in the comments and we will add it to the list.
That’s what Bob Soxs, aka Trev, admin of the Facebook group Youtube Sailing Channels did, when he asked “do you grow anything edible aboard? herbs etc etc, what about Alcohol? Does Esper have a still?”
And Nick Fowle, one of our top viewers, wants to know about the future. “I would be interested to hear your thoughts on what happens over the next six months or so to your lifestyle.. relative freedom for crossing borders for example…”
We don’t have a crystal ball, Nick, but we have some ideas. The short, medium and long-term scenarios for all cruisers is a big topic of discussion among the community. Border closures, quarantine and restricted movement in most territorial waters make it difficult for any of us to go anywhere. At the moment, we’re OK locked down in friendly Malaysia, but what will happen in six months time?
Did we miss anything off the essential tools list? Is there anything you would add to the list? Let us know in the comments and we’ll let you know if we have the tools you mention on board.
As always, thanks for supporting us and allowing us to share our adventure with you.
Peace, fair winds and stay safe
