Sometimes all you need is a bit of slow sailing and slow fishing on a lazy, sunny day.
The movement control orders have been severe since Malaysia’s international borders closed in March 2020. Since then we have been under one form of lockdown or another.
So when we are able to leave the marina to go somewhere, we always grab the opportunity to let SY Esper do what she does best.
With the sails out and engine off, it was time to bring out the Kraken, our famous Code 0 sail. With another knot of speed, we were still sailing at below 3kts, but we were in no hurry.
The island of Dinawan wasn’t too far away and was clearly in our sights.
Liz’s theory that slower speeds are better for catching fish with a plug lure (Rapala or similar) was put to the test. The Nautide app she had recently downloaded showed “two fish” in the minor period, a good sign that they were about.
In episode 265 on our YouTube channel we cover a few more fishing topics and ask for your thoughts: what is the most humane way to despatch a fish? Particularly when you are holding onto it on the back of a sailboat?
And we also want to know if you have any questions you would like us to answer? It’s probably best to keep them on topic – so sailing, cruising, travel etc. Although, if you’d like our opinion on this year’s Strictly Come Dancing contestants or whether The Archers is still relevant, I guess we might have a stab at answering.

I’m not a good fisherman, but while watching Jamie despatching the mackerel, I wondered if a short length of suitable diameter capped PVC (transparent) pipe (say 75mm) with a hole or slot in the end for a skewer or knife would work for despatching a slippery critter safely and humanely? Slide the fish into the tube, then presto?
Ian
Sounds good in theory, Ian. Knowing how much these fish fight though could be a problem getting it into that tube!
