Liz rashly picked up our new camera inside our sailboat, a DJI Pocket 3, to film herself walking from her ‘boffice’ to Jamie’s work station, unintentionally revealing the mess we are currently living in!
But it was all in a good cause, to interview Jamie about his forthcoming FREE Royal Photographic Online talk.
We have spent the past 17 years living aboard SY Esper, meeting new people and immersing ourselves in different cultures.
“Travelling by boat offers some unique advantages and I’ve learned some crucial lessons from travelling that, applied to my photography, have helped break down the barrier between photographer and subject.” Jamie Furlong, LRPS
Jamie’s up-close approach has resulted in some privileged experiences, as you will find if you browse through this blog or watch our videos. Exchanging cultural differences has been one of our greatest rewards from this life of sailing and travelling.
Jamie puts down his approach to simple curiosity. He doesn’t see the encounters as something to photograph for the scrapbook, but as an opportunity to meet new people, sometimes even making new friends.
“Having shot with you in Kerala, I know you get really close – right into the culture, make friends, share the life, relate and empathise. You are not exploitative or voyeuristic, but positive about what you see and how you present it. I think there are lessons for all of us in that.” Mike Longhurst, FRPS
