How to install a water heater on a boat

how to install a calorifier water maker

When the calorifier (water heater) started spraying the cabin with hot water it was time to take a look… And make a decision about whether to braze it (again) or bite the bullet and get a new one.

Ours is situated under the mattress at the foot of the bed on Jamie’s side, and we reckon it’s probably been there since SY Esper was built back in 1988! So, to be honest, it’s served our boat well.

are you fit to sail

From $1 a month to a $100 gift, there are three ways to support us…

Finding one which would give us enough hot water and fit into this precise space was the first hurdle. But it proved easier than we’d imagined once we got in touch with Surejust. They couldn’t have been more helpful, even giving us a concession on delivery as long as we mention them in the episode. Which we do. And here they are again just because they were so helpful.

Jamie removed the old one and installed the new one in an afternoon and in this video he takes us through each step of the way. He also explains exactly how a calorifier is built and how it works.

But, until the new one arrived, we had just one small hand pump for fresh water, so it was back to the marina to wait and to keep clean!

Here’s the full episode…

Thanks for being along for the ride with us.

Peace and fair winds!
Liz and Jamie xx
