I saw this story and figured I’d share it here since I know a lot of sailors are pretty excited by the prospect of Starlink internet. It looks like the current dish equipment doesn’t do particularly well in the heat and sun. Until the overheating issue is resolved, I think it’s going to be tough for sailors in the tropics 🙁 https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2021/06/starlink-dish-overheats-in-arizona-sun-knocking-user-offline-for-7-hours/

That’s especially bad news for sailors what with our dependency on the sun. Starlink isn’t suitable for sailors ATM though because I don’t think they’ve come up with tracking package that can be mounted on a moving vessel, unless I’ve missed it. Existing systems are super expensive so it’ll be interesting to see if Starlink can come up with an affordable nautical package.

But being forced to sprinkle the garden hose on the dish to maintain connection isn’t great, is it? Especially as this system was touted as a solution for poor communities in places like Africa!

    Peace and fair winds!
