We have just administered the first of three chemo therapy tablets. When we tried this a couple of months ago she had a violent seizure, but Gillian (Millie’s vet) thinks this was more likely to be an adverse reaction to the opiate she was taking. So far it’s been six hours since she had the drug and she has been nibbling at her food. She’s now on top of Liz’s wardrobe, sleeping.

We made the decision last night that this will be the last course of action we’ll be taking with Millie. She got better recently, putting on weight, being her old, vocal self, even going as far as catching a rat and bringing it to us as a gift at five in the morning.

But in the last two weeks she’s crashed.

Now she is just a whisper of a shadow, no longer the vibrant girl who travelled the seven seas with us for the last twelve years.

We never really got to the bottom of what has been causing her illness, but cancer was always a possibility. She’s been too weak to have anything other than a needle biopsy (the results of which showed distorted cells, but not cancer) so we’re not sure what the underlying illness is. Chemo was always on the back-burner as a last resort and since there are no more options we have nothing to lose.

Her face and hips are painfully thin and her once bright white fur is a dull, dirty cream, the result of being on steroids for so long.

Although she’s not eating as much as we’d like, she still has an appetite, and a moment ago when we opened a sachet of food she got all animated with her tail up and went straight to the bowl. She can still get on and off the boat, although we’re not allowing her to because we’ve been ticked off for pooing on other people’s boats, something she has never done; besides that, we want her near us.

One thing is for sure, Millie is a fighter and has a lot of love and support coming in from around the world.

Unless she reacts positively to the chlorambucil, we’re afraid of what’s going to happen next and are feeling pretty desolate at the prospect of a life without Millie.

We are staying by her side every minute of the day.

Thanks for listening and keep your paws crossed for our beautiful girl.

    Liz, Jamie and Millie xxx

    Peace and fair winds!

It’s the hardest part of having pets. I’ve been through this so many times, Liz and Jaimie. Obviously, Millie is very special to you and very loved. You’ve given her the best kind of life, something so few pets are lucky enough to enjoy.

Millie is loved and has no doubt had months more than she would have had without your commitment to her welfare. Fingers crossed and best wishes for this treatment.

UPDATE:Your love here and on our social media is doing the trick. We had a peaceful night and this morning she’s got bright eyes and a tail held high. She’s eating small amounts and drinking water. At the moment she’s asleep on top of the fridge, the coolest spot on the boat (she’s no fool!).
Keep remembering her, it’s working! Liz x💛x

Millie is an internationally know cat celebrity…she has made it big touring the world on a famous yatch from her humble beginnings working the Turkish docks.  She spends her days Enjoying fresh caught fish ,while sun bathing on her hammock chair. Her sultry nights out  are for cruising prey or party boat hopping. If in port too long, she manages to find a boat  in the marina that will accomadate her nap time schedule. Never one to be left out of the cruise itinerary….except that one time she fell over board from too early a departure time. Such a dedicated sailor that she sleeps on deck , port  side.  And just like the rest of us, covid 19 has her hair  and nails in need of a spa day.  Some days Millie thinks about moving on,  to bigger and better things, but most days she satisfied and content to stay around Esper.

You’re right, it’s pervading the boat, and that’s because of our lovely Millie. Liz x

I think as owners (or “the owned”) it’s our responsibility to do everything we can to give our pets the best life. I’ve been through this too and know what’s coming, but at the moment she’s happy and pain-free so we’ll carry on doing everything we can. Thank you for sharing your beautiful image. Liz x

Oh Susan, so lovely! You’ve got Millie exactly right. She also loves meeting her subjects and always turns on the charm when people visit. She’s a hostess with the mostest. Thank you for the sweet words. Liz x (and Millie xx)

Thanks so much, Erika. So far she’s responding well with a shinier coat and a little extra weight gained. We know it’s just the drugs at the moment, but are hoping they’ll kick-start her back to her old self. Liz xx
