Apart from the deep joy of discovering that our engine has seized, it feels like some kind of nautical episode of ‘Back to the Future’ here on SY Esper.
Our regular Sailing Log Diary on YouTube–which out of necessity runs a few months behind real time–shows Jamie sailing alone in Thailand with Liz back in the UK looking after her ailing mum. And yet, right now, Liz has just returned from her second visit home to tend to Dottie while Jamie has been solo-sailing in Thailand.
In the words of Shirley Bassey and the Propellerheads “…it’s all just a little bit of history repeating…”
Confused? We are!
If you follow us on Facebook and Instagram (@followtheboat), you’ll have seen posts about our disintegrating engine and are probably wondering what will happen next. Well, rather than make you wait until our Sailing Logs catch up with real time, we thought we’d share a very quick update by uploading an FTB Extra on our YouTube sailing channel. It’s here at the top of the page as an embedded video, but if for some reason you cannot play it, watch it here.
In the meantime, if you want to keep an eye on what we are up to every day, please like our Facebook page so that you can join in the conversation and share your opinions with us.
Peace! And fair winds!

Hi guys, I love following your adventures. What model camera do you use for you videos? You get some great shots. This southern hemisphere winter I will be spending a couple of weeks in Vanuatu on an FP Lavezzi 40 and want to document our trip.
p.s. love that you are sailing the “wrong” way round the world.
Hi Ben, thanks for the comment. Camera is an Olympus OM-D EM5 Mk II and we use sports cameras like the GoPro Hero 4. We hope to put out an FTB Extra video on all our video equipment so stay tuned!
Sorry to hear of your engine troubles it sounds like we are in a similar situation.
We also have a 435 in Malaysia, so I guess we are not so far apart either. I believe we may have touched base with you a few years back when we we’re still based in Oz. This may be of interest to you, we have just removed our aged volvo penta and ordered a new Beta 60.
Feel free to PM us to compare notes.
Cheers
Ben&Belle
Well that’s just uncanny. We too are going for the Beta 60! We’ll be in touch via email to find out how you get on with your replacement.
