Despite being at anchor these past few months I’ve managed to stay on top of my photographic duties. The Urban Picnic Street Photography Competition, which I helped set up with Rob Hill of Urban Picnic, was a huge success, drawing in hundreds of entries from around the world. As a spin-off to this Rob has set up a bi-monthly ‘inspiration’ feature where two street photographers come together to work on a project with a common theme.
I was invited to take part in one such project with Italian street photography Francesca Fascione. The theme was ‘minimal’. Unfortunately timing was not on my side so I had just two one-hour photography sessions to find four images to submit for the theme. One session was spent on Male itself, whilst the other was spent on Guiridhoo, our next destination after Rannalhi, based on the south east corner of the South Male Atoll.
I interpreted the theme ‘minimal’ to mean minimal colours in each image. Minimal is not a style I’m used to so the project was quite challenging. Recently I’ve been using an external flash but for this project I didn’t use it, instead opting to utilise the strong sun here in the tropics.
